Target Stores to Open in Canada

By  |

It’s finally happening. Toronto Life reports that Target is coming to Canada.  Target stores will join American companies like J. Crew, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney and Crate and Barrel who have already opened outlets in Canada.  I know many of my Canadian readers will be thrilled at this news. Now they will have the chance to check out Target’s designer collections (maybe even the forthcoming Calypso St. Bart).   However, this is not happening quickly. By 2013, the Target stores are expected to open in Canada, replacing the HBC-owned chain Zellers. According to  Toronto Life “In a $1.8-billion deal announced Thursday, Target Corp. will acquire and convert most of the Zellers stores in Canada from parent company Hudson Bay Co., while the rest of the Target stores will be picked up by other retail enterprises. The Zellers takeover is similar to when Wal-Mart entered the Canadian market after snapping up Woolco stores in 1994.”
