It took a really big sale at Banana Republic to get me into their store to check out L’Wren Scott holiday collection for Banana today. Right now the collection is 40% off at Banana Republic online and reduced in-store (for 30%) off. My expectations for this collection were low.  Don’t get me wrong, I love L’Wren Scott , but I always think her designs won’t look good on me because I don’t find most body conscious dresses to be flattering on me. With L’Wren, although I love her designs, I expect them to be cut pencil thin.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that the  collection is not just for glamazons.   The dresses will flatter the curvy full figure, as well as those who are model slim and can wear sample sizes.  Here’s what The Recessionista recommends from this collection for holiday parties and maybe even gift giving.

Lwren scott dresses

The holiday dresses from L’Wren Scott are stylish and sophisticated.

Befitting a holiday collection, the L’Wren Scott for Banana Republic is full of sparkle, lace, brocades and colors like red, green, black and silver.  The dresses are body contouring, but they do have stretch in them so you can move and breath easily.  My favorite was the lace dress in black. This is a sexy little black dress, with plenty of stretch in it.  It’s a flattering cut.  The sweetheart dress  (in red or black) with the belt is a glamorous style, that also more flattering on than you might expect. It has stretch in the hips, so the cut it not as slim as you expect from seeing it on the hangers.

My store didn’t have any of the jackets, so I can’t comment on those.  There were plenty of the sweaters with sequin panels, and they are very cute and fitting holiday wear.  Just check the sequins carefully.  A lot of the ones I saw were creased from being folded and placed in stacks on tables. The sweaters that had been creased had loose sequins on them, so check them carefully.  I did like the design of the sweaters. Although the sweater is short waisted, so be sure to try it on, especially if you are tall.   The little t-shirts with sayings like “Decadent Glamour” and ” Glamora” are adorable, and owe a nod to Lulu Guinness’s cheeky style.  These are on sale now, but I think the price will drop again closer to the holidays.  I’ll be watching  the tees and the accessories in the collection via tools like Hukkster for the best price before I buy.  The retail price now is $39.99.   With the code BRGIFT40 until 12/18, they are  approximately $25.00–not a bad price for a cute girlfriend’s gift.

The accessories are cute, but not that special for $150.00 for a “lip print” clutch or a tote.   Those will undoubtedly go clearance after Christmas.  I think the knit beret and scarves will also hit the clearance racks.

If you’re interested in a good looking holiday or New Year’s Eve Party  dress , check out the L’Wren Scott for Banana Republic collection now.  The dresses are selling briskly.  If you like the accessories from the collection, look for those to be deeply reduced after the holiday.  The lip print socks, scarves and clutches are not must haves in my opinion.  It’s the L’Wren Scott body skimming dresses that the designer is famous for and that usually sell for hundreds of dollars.  The dresses are the stars of this Banana Republic collection, everything else is just along for the ride.
