This week, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton. This event honors the film costume designers who make the apparel or coordinate the costumes that help to give voice to characters in film. The Costume Designers Guild Awards is one of the most relaxed and enjoyable events during Oscar Award Season Week. LaCoste honoree Naomi Watts looked beautiful in a flowing white Altuzzara blush white halter dress. Hostess Emily Rossum held court in a blush Oscar de la Renta gown that screamed old Hollywood style. Read on to hear about the designers honored by actors and their peers at the gala. Yesterday designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka showed the Badgley Mischka Fall 2015 Collection in the Theater at Lincoln Center. For me Badgley Mischka is always Cinderella time–their gowns are like the ultimate dream for any woman. This year’s collection was The collection was inspired by Spain, and in particular the Spanish bull fighting customs. The collection featured the baroque embellishment traditions of the matador combined with the severity and restraint of Modernist architecture – Blood and Sand meets The Fountainhead. This season, Badgley Mischka plays textures and dimension with prints and embellishment for a rich, informed luxury. Models glided down the runway in wearing Amy Winehouse vintage styled beehives and heavily made-up eyes. Continue reading

It’s true literally and figuratively: Desigual bought the warmth to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for Fall 2015. Colorful, energetic and above all positive the Desigual show is always a departure from the spartan runways and grim faces of most runway models at New York Fashion Week. With this collection, Desigual and Monsieur Christian Lacroix decided to celebrate the world of creativity. For Fall 2015, Desigual showed a collection featuring geometric motifs in black and white, multi-colored cardigans with a Scandinavian feel and structured dresses dipped in watercolors. There were also trademark Desigual floral skirts in printed tulle and cocoon coats in true Lacroix style. The result was an eclectic and sophisticated mix that is like a fashion wake up call amid the traditional black, greys and reds on the Fall 2015 runways. Continue reading
In 2012, I attended the Costume Designer Guild Awards. I covered the event here on The Recessionista and also on The Huffington Post. That year, Hallie Berry was the LACOSTE Honoree at she stepped out on the red carpet in a gorgeous Ellie Saab red gown. She was stunning. When I first started going to Hollywood events and New York Fashion Week, I was more concerned about writing . After all, I am someone who is primarily behind the screen. For a long time I was only behind the blog. Now, things have changed. It’s the era of the selfie and social media and all of us need to pay more attention to how we look and our appearance, which is our personal brand. Because of that, I asked stylist Negar Ali Kline to give me some tips as I prepare to attend this year’s Costume Designer Guild awards as the guest of Carefree Liners. As I prepare to get ready, Ms. Kline gave me some great styling tips. These are things any woman can do to look and feel her best at a special event. Continue reading
