Here at The Recessionista, we love the Little Black Dress (LBD) concept, and you may be able to tell that from our fashionable new logo.   The concept of one Little Black Dress came from none other than Coco Chanel, who believed that women needed one dress that could take them everywhere . She believed a simple black dress could be changed with various pieces of jewelry, bags or shoes.  In the 1920’s Vogue likened Chanel’s simple drop waist LBD to a Ford Model T  saying the dress could become “a sort of uniform for all women of taste.”  Now comes a completely new take on the little black dress concept.  Five different LBDs are now available for just $20.00, from wait for it…Walmart.

Honestly, I haven’t thought highly of any fashions available at Walmart since Norma Kamali departed their stores.  That’s why you haven’t seen anything here on The Recessionista about clothes from Walmart. But there are a number of things that I like about this Penny Chic Little Black Dress collection.  The dress styles include the Skater, the Peplum, the Curvy dress (sold-out) and the Classic dress (sold-out online.)

  • Style and Fit: The dresses are stylish as conceived by fashion blogger  Shauna Miller, author of the Penny Chic blog. I have the curvy dress from the collection and it is surprising comfortable and seems wrinkle resistant.   Although the dress looks causal out of the box, it can be dressed up very nicely with a simple strand of pearls or a pendant.  The material is 64% polyester, 28% rayon, 5% spandex, so there is some stretch in the garment, which makes it comfortable.
  • Price: At just $20.00 the price is right.
  • Production:  All the dresses are made in America, providing jobs for US citizens, which is something I love.
  • Sizes for All: The dresses range in size XS-XL and select styles are available in Plus Sizes from 1X-4X
  • Machine Washable:  All dress are machine washable so upkeep is inexpensive.  I don’t think these dresses will last forever, but for the price, you will get several wearings.

The entire collection of five Little Black Dresses is available online at Walmart.com.  If you check it out, let me know what you think. The reviews on Walmart.com from customers who have purchased the dresses are very good with most customers stating that they like the fit and style of the dresses.
