Betsey Johnson’s reality show is coming to the Style Network

Designer Betsey Johnson maybe fashion’s newest comeback kid. After declaring bankruptcy last year, the designer is bouncing back with a dress collection for Macy’s , funding from Steve Madden and a reality TV show about to premiere on the Style Network May 12th.   For those of us who loved Betsey’ fashions, this is more like the happy ending we wished for this designer instead of the going out of business sales that occurred last year.   I had the privilege of seeing a preview of Betsey’s reality show at the recent Lucky Fabb conference.  So what’s the show about?  The show is entitled “Betsey & LuLu” and it follows the relationship between the designer and her daughter Lulu as both women strive to establish their fashion careers.  Betsey is rebooting her career as an online retailer with funding from Steve Madden.   Her daughter LuLu is just starting out.  If you’ve ever seen a Betsey Johnson fashion show at New York Fashion Week then you know that she is one of fashion’s great eccentrics.   Who can forget her cartwheels down the runway?   It’s that free spirited style that makes Betsey a perfect fit for reality TV.  Although I am sure the show is scripted (as I believe every reality show really is)  Betsey comes across as an original and you can’t help but root for her as she takes on a new phase in her fashion career, struggles to understand social media (in a priceless scene) and works to support her daughter.  Even if you haven’t worn Betsey Johnson or followed her career, I think you’ll enjoy “Betsey & LuLu.” It’s a great look at an American original, a woman who has both talent and personality to recommend her.    Move over Kardashians, Betsey’s moving in!   At age 70, I think she is ready to take on all comers 🙂   “Betsey & LuLu” debuts Sunday on May 12th on the Style Network.
