Recently, I received some samples from Avon. And honestly, it was a pleasant surprise. I’ve been so busy with work and writing, I hadn’t checked in on Avon lately to see what was new. The last time I checked it out was because they were selling a low-priced, irresistible Marimekko handbag. So let me give you the low-down. The Avon collection has expanded way beyond make-up and perfume. Their website and catalogue now feature fashion accessories, well priced “bling” (costume jewelry) and handbags. The nice thing about getting samples is exploring some things that fall outside of your own personal taste. For example the above stretch watch is not something I would’ve picked for myself. However, I have worn it several times now and received numerous compliments on it! I wore it on a recent trip to Las Vegas and it was the perfect getaway fashion accessory. With the holidays coming up, this is a good option for those looking for a cheap and chic time piece for parties. The watch has just been reduced from $34.99 to $24.99, so the price is right. There are more conservative pieces in the Avon collection too, like this Fashion Chain link watch for only $12.99. I haven’t received a sample for this piece, or seen anything beyond the pictures, but I love the look of it and the price.

The Avon collection also features cute handbags and warm scarves in Avon’s new “cashtastic” material. “Cashtastic” is acrylic with more than a passing resemblance to cashmere. Check out the ruffle scarf for $14.99.

And last but not least, take a look at this winter tote bag. Avon calls it the “Wool Tote of the Town.” It’s roomy enough to carry your essentials: lipstick, blush compact, brush, wallet and even a small laptop (mine is now almost surgically attached.)

Although Avon sent me some free samples, I am not writing this post because of that. In the current economy, its good to know where there is fashion value for a good price. This week as the Madoff family’s luxury goods are about to hit the auction block, it seems particularly fitting to talk about what is available at prices you don’t have to beg, borrow or steal for. Think about it, does anyone need a $20,000 handbag with a price tag that includes a prison term? If you’re looking for luxury goods for less, but still in the thousands, then check out the US Marshall’s auction. For the rest of us trying to live within our means, Avon provides some good options.
