I stopped by my local Target to pick up a few things this week and there was the Peter Pilotto collection on sale. Just 27 days after the launch, the clearance has begun. The racks were full and everything was reduced by 30%. The sale is on, not just in store by online too. As I said in my earlier review, I like this collection but I could tell it was not for many Target shoppers with its bring floral prints and mixed media garments. I’ve seen a lot of Target shoppers passing it by. There doesn’t seem to be much name recognition for the British design team among Target shoppers either.

Physicians Formula truly has the prescription for glamour. They have launched a variety of new make-up lines to capitalize of the hottest make-up trends like the “nude look” and “smokey eyes.
What I like about their new products and packaging is the helpful instructions inside the package that show you how to apply the make-up for maximum effect. I used it for the Oscar parties I was invited to this last weekend and was thrilled with the results. You don’t have to be a celebrity make-up artist to use these products for a glamorous looks. If you watched the Oscars on Sunday, the “smokey eye” look was a popular trend on the red carpet. I sat down with Celebrity Make-up Artist Joanna Schlip to ask how to achieve the look at home. Here are her easy to follow tips. Continue reading
We’re still lusting over the fashions and jewelry we saw on the red carpet at the 2014 Oscars. Most of us can’t borrow diamonds from Chopard, Fred Leighton, Tiffany’s or Van Cleff & Arpels for a special event. But with a little digging, you can find similar styles at discounters. Since Sunday , The Recessionista has been studying the Oscar looks. We loved Penelope Cruz’s pink Giambattista Valli gown paired with diamonds. Although we didn’t see any chic n’ cheap looks on this year’s Oscar 2014 red carpet, we’ve already spotted one soon to be off-the rack pick at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party here in Los Angeles. Academy Award winning actress Penélope Cruz showed up at the party in a beautiful fitted flamenco inspired gown designed by H&M. H&M’s in-house design team customized the look to especially for Ms. Cruz . The midnight blue full length ruffled gown is made of environmentally sustainable materials. Look for a similar style at select H&M stores as part of the Conscious Exclusive collection launching April 10, 2014. Continue reading
There were no recessionistas on the Oscar red carpet this year, no H&M dresses or off-the rack. It was all about haute couture and Cate Blanchett owned it in Armani Prive. It looks like Armani customized an illusion sheath dress from their Fall 2013 collection for the actress. We asked Armani about this gorgeous dress. They shared these details. Ms. Blanchett “wore a soft gold-color gown. The romantic cap-sleeve dress featured a long, flared tulle skirt with crinoline edging, fully embroidered with raised dégradé sequins and light gold Swarovski crystal baguettes. Talk about class. Trends on this year’s red carpet included the glittering nude metallic look epitomized by Ms. Blanchett, pastels and lots of midnight blue (Amy Adams in Gucci and Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen.) It’s Oscar time here in Los Angeles. That means almost every actress in town is on a diet getting ready for Oscar parties, red carpet events or the ceremony itself. I haven’t been to one blogger party or event this week that didn’t feature healthy lifestyle products including this Splenda. I’ve been using Splenda quite a bit lately as part of my 2014 diet and fitness program. Choosing what you eat is as important as choosing what you wear or planning a budget. Did you know that experts recommend that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day, yet the average American eats 22 teaspoons daily! Statistics show we’re all on sugar overload, from soft drinks to fast food, sugar is a key ingredient in so many foods. It’s important to read food labels and restaurant menus whether you’re getting red carpet ready or not. This week, I’m working with Splenda to help get the word out on healthy lifestyle choices and joining a Twitter party to share tips on using Splenda. You can join the Twitter Party too on March 4th at noon ET/9 am PT using the hashtag #Sweetswaps. Read on to learn how to join and share your tips, plus learn how to win some cool prizes. She was the original recessionista on the red carpet. When Joanne Woodward, won her best actress Oscar for ” The Three Faces of Eve” she wore a strapless green gown with a full skirt that she made for one hundred dollars. Ms. Woodward claimed it took her two weeks to make the dress. Although many gorgeous designer gowns by legendary fashion designers have graced the red carpet at the Academy Awards, including gowns from Dior, Givenchy, Valentino, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Armani Prive and many more, none of those gowns were rated as “the best remembered. In a survey this week by ABC News “Instant Index” Grace Kelly’s 1955 green/blue gown designed by costume designer Edith Head, was rated by viewers as still the number one Oscar dress choice. Since being quote in today’s The New York Times about my fond memories of Loehmann’s stores, I’m getting some emails from new and regular readers asking a big question. Are all the stores officially closed? It’s a good question. Although I checked with two stores in California ( Beverly Hills and Orange County) and mid-March was given as the closing date, it appears that is no longer valid. All 39 stores are now officially closed. It really is the end of a shopping era. Fashion lovers who love a deal must now turn to stores like Nordstrom Rack, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Off 5th and occasionally TJ Maxx or Marshall’s.
