It’s always great to learn about new fashion labels with products made in America by American workers that deliver quality for price. Love +Grace is a California brand founded in 2013 that makes luxury loungewear that is uber comfortable. The brand recently sent me a piece for evaluation. I’ve been test driving the one of the brand’s chemise tops for about a week. Here’s why you’ll want to check out this apparel , especially if you spend the day working from home on the computer! Here’s some great budget fashion new for fall: UNIQLO is bringing back a ‘Best of the +J collection’ on Oct. 3 in Philadelphia and at other locations and online on Oct. 10. The relaunch of the popular +J pieces is in “response to overwhelming customer demand.” The collection will range in price from $39.90 – $229.90. Some of you may recall that the original + J collections were sell-outs for UNIQLO and sold on eBay at greatly inflated prices. The reissue is neatly timed to coincide with the opening of new UNIQLO stores in Los Angeles, Orange County, Philadelphia and Boston. Continue reading
Elie Tahari‘s limited edition fashion collection for Kohl’s is now available in stores. Yesterday, armed with my Kohl’s coupons, Kohl’s cash and Yes2You Rewards certificate, I stopped by to check out the collection. There are some good pieces in the collection, but overall this is not a collection I fell in love. The color palette is predominantly black with a little blue and ivory thrown in. Prices range from $40 to $175, so choose carefully to get the items that deliver value. Here are my picks from the Elie Tahari for Kohl’s collection and the items I would leave on the racks. I think much of this collection will eventually make its way to clearance due to the lack of “wow factor.” Most of the pieces don’t make you want to hit the buy button.
Here’s some good news to end the week with, the next Kohl’s Designer collection will MILLY by Michelle Smith. Michelle Smith will be the sixth designer for the retailer’s DesigNation limited-edition collection. As part of the Kohl’s DesigNation concept featuring premier designer fashion based on international inspiration, the collection will draw creative influence from Smith’s recent trip to Capri, Italy. The capsule collection features women’s apparel and will be available exclusively at Kohl’s and Kohls.com beginning Spring 2015. For the last two seasons, MILLY has showed transparent garments at New York Fashion Week. Hopefully , everything at Kohl’s will not be as diaphanous. After all, most of the mass market of women buying fashion apparel like to wear Spanx or other foundation garments. Continue reading

In the US, Fashion’s Night Out at New York Fashion Week is a thing of the past. Not so in London. Vogue and Topshop are planning a shopping extravaganza in London on Sept. 23, 2014. They’ll be special deals, beauty tips, a prize draw and entertainment at my favorite Topshop store, the Oxford Circus store in London. Get all the details here and if you’re in London, learn how to enter to win prizes at Topshop.
Budget Fashion is now part of New York Fashion Week. Anna Wintour goes to a show to see a collection sponsored by HSN (the Home Shopping Network), HSN shows off their new Fall “Fashion Edit” collections, ELLE Editor Joe Zee joins with Old Navy for a fashion presentation, Kohl’s shows their ELLE Collection, Target throws a preview party for Altuzarra for Target and a Chinese Laundry shows off their new collaboration with actress Kristen Bell. What’s happening to New York Fashion Week? Clearly, the democratization of American fashion is coming full circle with many mass retailers showing their lines along with the high-end designers. If you believe like I do that fashion can be entertainment as well as art (and of yes a business too) then you might enjoy the pampering experience of attending a MADE Fashion Week show via the VIP experience that American Express offers their cardholders. For over a year, American Express has offered cardholders the chance to buy tickets to see shows at both Lincoln Center in the SKYBOX and at MADE Fashion Week sitting next to the runway. This year I had the chance to attend the Ohne Titel Spring/Summer 2015 show as a VIP at MADE Fashion Week in New York City at Milk Studios. It’s a much different experience than attending a show at Lincoln Center.
Now that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week shows for Spring/Summer 2015 are ended, I’ve taken some time to think about what I saw on the runway to try to summarize the shows. Each show always contains garments that you know buyers and stylists will pick up for next season and those that will be left behind. Some consumers may not realize that much of what the designers send down the runway will never be picked up by buyers to be mass-produced and sold in stores. You can take a look at some of the pictures from the shows and make some very educated guesses about what might actually show up on retails racks. As you might expect, most of the Spring/Summer 2015 collections offered plenty of floral and bright vibrant colors. However, there was still plenty of black and white on the runway, and more muted colors as well. For women, the Spring 2015 color palette includes Aquamarine, Scuba Blue, Lucite Green,Classic Blue,Toasted Almond, Strawberry Ice, Tangerine, Custard.Marsala and Glacier Gray. Here’s a look at some of the shows The Recessionista attended at New York Fashion Week, featuring some emerging designers with unique perspectives on Spring. Continue reading
