Fall Fashion Trends We Love for 2014

A Burgundy Dress with Black Side Panels, the color blocking is slimming
The New York Fashion Week runways were alive with fashion for the next season, Spring/Summer 2015. But the season that is here and now is Fall/Winter 2014. What are you looking to wear now? That’s the question many of my readers are asking.  With the 2014 Polar Vortex on the way, you want to pick fashionable clothes that are also warm and functional.  Here’s what The Recessionista is loving for Fall Fashion.

The Midi dress is back

Midi dresses (and skirts) are back for Fall 2014.  Midi dresses (below the knee hemline) were the norm before the mini dress came on the scene in the 1960’s.   This season the longer hemlines are back and Designers and retailers like Shopbop,  H&M and ASOS are showing some terrific looking midis.  I love this trend because it elongates the figure, and in most cases it will make the wearer look slimmer and even a little taller.

Dress up your fall wardrobe with Oxblood, a new deeper shade of red.
Retail stores are  full of this deep, beyond Burgundy red shade. It’s great for coats, dresses or turtlenecks.

 Gray is the new black
Pearl gray turtlenecks, dresses and scarves are perfect for fall. They lighten up your wardrobe but are not too somber, after all, you want to look upbeat, and black may be too limiting. Gray literally sheds a bit of light. Dress it up with a strand of pearls for a classic look.

There’s no end to the lace trend
Lace overlay dresses and tops, popularized by Kate Middleton, are still in vogue. For Fall, the lace trend looks great in black, navy, evergreen and red.

Skinny Jeans
I’m loving the return of skinny jeans paired with a great jacket or even an oversized chunky sweater. The DENIZEN from the Levi’s brand  Skinny Jeans at Target fit like a second skin but with plenty of stretch, they are comfortable and provide a slim silhouette for under $30.00.  They offer a great black jean in supersoft fabric that is perfect for Fall wear and the holidays.

Colorblock Dresses
The color block trend on dresses and tops, it’s slimming & colorful.  The technique involves putting different panels of fabric on the sides of a garment for accent and a slimming effect.  Designer Stella McCartney was the designer to put this trend on the map when celebrities wore her colorblock dresses on the red carpet. For more affordable options, there are some great color block dresses in Elie Tahari’s collection for Kohl’s and from Los Angeles designer Karen Kane.

Stay tuned for more fall tips as the season evolves and the weather changes. What’s  your favorite Fall Fashion trend  readers?
