Coral pieces from Peter Som for Kohl’s

It’s taken me a few days to be able to review all the pieces in the Peter Som’s collection for Kohl’s.  The first Kohl’s store I went to had a small assortment of the pieces , the second store had a better variety.  I’ve now seen and inspected most of the pieces, so I can give an informed opinion of this collection.  First, I love the colors and the prints.   The postcard print is really gorgeous and there is a maxi dress, top and skirt with this beautiful vintage looking print on them.  The tops and pants with mixed tropical prints and stripes are all really good looking.    Everything is well priced.   My one criticism of this collection is that some of the pieces are so oversized they  are not flattering.   But that is not all of the collection.   Here are The Recessionista’s  favorites based on quality and price.  Some of the dresses will make great choices for Easter or Mother’s Day.

Haltered Maxi Dress for $78.00

One of this collection’s standouts in the Postcard Maxi dress. This is probably my favorite piece from the collection. You’d never think this dress was from a budget collection. It looks like luxury resort wear.  The halter top has red and blue postcard prints of different spots on St. Barths.  The bottom is a solid blue contrast that is  sheer that matches the halter top ties.  The dress is loosely constructed with only a tie waist for definition, but it works.  This is a dress you need to try on in person, and you may want to size down in it since it is a loose, breezy fit.   For $58.00 on sale, this dress is is worth the price.

Because I love the postcard print, I also like the postcard sweatshirt top, maxi skirt and shirt dress.   The maxi skirt is very generously cut, with just a draw string tie to pull it in and it’s really supersized. You can literally drown in it, so if you like it , you may have to size down.  The top is more fitted as is the shirt dress.

The short eyelet dresses are cute and the black and white dress with the contrasting ruffle bottom are cute spring/summer wear.   They are shorter than you might expect. The motorcycle  “moto” jacket is very comfortable with it’s poly/rayon/spandex blend and is generously cut.

If you go to the store, try on the Tapered Jumpsuit.  I love this piece and I didn’t think I would.  It’s super stylish, and the fit is great, with the tie waist and the tapering at the ankles.  I like it in both the solid black and the contrast black and white print top with black bottom.   This piece runs true to size and is fitted at the top, but loose at the bottom, as you would expect since you have to pull it on.  I also like the comfort and fit on the Tapered Terry Pants.

eterSom Kohls romper and dress

Peter Som for Kohl’s Romper- $64 and
Charmeuse Halter Dress- $70

The Maxi dresses in both the Prints and Stripes are comfortable and good looking.   The rompers are cute in the stripe and the charmeuse print.   They are more fitted and slim cut.

So what are the misses?  I found the Palm Leaf Halter dress and the shift dress  (above) too oversized and shapeless to  be flattering.  There is just too much fabric with no definition.  I see those going to clearance because they won’t look good on most women.  I think the wide legged pants are way too much fabric without enough shape.    The short striped dresses are just ok, nothing too special.   In my opinion, the motorcycle vests are also not that special, and they may hit the clearance racks.

One interesting thing about this collection, most of the Kohl’s shoppers I talked to didn’t know who Peter Som was, but they were anxious to check out this collection because of the pretty dresses on the store displays and the under $70.00 price tag on most items.    If you try this collection on, leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.  There are some great finds here.  But there are a few oversized pieces that I feel won’t really compliment most women’s figures, so choose wisely when you shop.
