When I think of the Agave plant, I think about its most famous by product:  Tequila.  But recently I discovered that Agave has other uses. Beverly Hills Salon Owner  Fernando Romero learned how to use Agave from  his grandmother when he was growing up in Mexico to create organic hair and body products using Agave, Coconut and Vanilla.   As you might expect, the resulting own smells wonderful. The scent is light and sweet.   The sweet smell comes from the sugar in the Agave plant.   Sugar seems to be the magic ingredient in the Agave plant.  It’s the sugar in the Agave that moisturizes hair when used in Mr. Romero’s line of Bio Ionic shampoo , conditioner and healing oil that helps to calm coarse and frizzy hair.   I recently had the opportunity to try the Bio Ionic products at Mr. Romero’s salon in Beverly Hills on Canon Dr.

Although Argan Oil is currently a popular treatment to smooth hair and is sold by many name brands, Mr. Romero finds that the Agave Oil is more effective.  ” Agave takes seven years to mature.  The  sugar in agave is great to moisturize the hair,” explains Mr. Romero.  “In contrast,  Argan oil is from a nut so it’s more heavy  on the hair.”  How does the Agave compare to silicon masks on the market in various hair products?   The Agave oil has better  hair cuticle penetration, ” note Mr. Romero.  “Because of that penetration  an at home treatment with Bio Ionic agave oil hydrates and conditions the hair— it doesn’t burn the hair .”  Another benefit according to Mr. Romero is the ” color-restoring sugars of the Agave plant.”  That means if your hair is color treated, using Agave can help your color last longer and remain vibrant.”

Agave curling iron

Since visiting the Fernando Romero salon I’ve been test driving the Agave shampoo and conditioner at home.   Both products have a delicious scent.  I found I only need a drop of the shampoo for a thorough cleansing.   The shampoo is so gentle, you almost don’t need a conditioner with it.   For my fine curly hair, the conditioner adds a bit too much weight.  I shampoo and spray in a leave in smoother,  then just rub in a few drops of the Agave oil.    If I want to straighten my hair for a special night out, I use the Bio Ionic curling iron.  This is probably my favorite product in the Bio Ionic line. This curling iron is the answer for eliminating frizzy hair and making it behave. I have three different flat irons and I haven’t ever written about them because they don’t really help to straighten and smooth my natural curls.  The Agave Bio Ionic Healing Iron is different.   You pour the Agave Oil in a small amount into a little compartment on top of the iron.  Then , as you pull the hair to straighten it, you push a small button to release the oil.  The oil, combined with the heat, delivers straight shiny hair.  The oil protects the hair from being damaged by the heat of the oil.  It’s brilliant.  The Agave steam flat iron is priced at $149.00 at Sephora, but it’s professional stylist quality and gets the job done.  The product performs so well, I’ve taken it to my local salon and had my regular stylist use it on me.   My stylist was amazed at the results. It’s a bit of a splurge to buy the Agave “Healing”  Flat Iron, but it’s sold on QVC, Sephora and eBay, so watch those channels for sales on the iron.

I  was so impressed by Mr. Romero, his product and his team that I returned to the Fernando Romero salon and paid to have my hair colored by stylist Annika Haugton.   She did a great job giving my blonde highlights a lift as you can see from the picture above.  And of course she straightened my hair to perfection using the Agave Flat Iron. My last tip about the sweet smelling Agave Oil is that it makes an excellent diffuser.  I bought a few bottles on the Bio Ionic Agave Oil  with Reed Diffuser on eBay for a very reasonable price.   I’m now using these to scent my kitchen and bathrooms. If you’re looking for a delicious room scent, check out the Agave Oil from Bio-Ionic.

FTC Disclosure: In the interest of full disclosure, I received Bio Iconic Hair products, free of charge,  for evaluation purposes to write this review.  I have not been paid for this review and the opinions here are my own.   I paid for my own highlights an d hair treatment at the Fernando Romero salon, although I received a small discount on the services.
