Designer John Galliano in a scene from the viral video that ruined him

Talk about a lucky break for designer John Galliano.  Oscar de la Renta has  announced that he has invited John Galliano to spend some time with him in his design studio over the next three weeks. Galliano, once the creative director of Christian Dior,  self destructed when he made anti-Semitic remarks and declared his love for Hitler a few years back.  Every bit of his infamous rant was captured on video. The video has been viewed thousands of times on Youtube now. Yes, the career deterioration light starts buzzing when you start praising Hitler.  Despite his design talent,  Galliano is lucky that Mr. de la Renta has agreed to work with him and issued a press release about it.  That’s quite a vote of confidence. It also sounds strangely like a trial run. If the three week period goes well, will Ocar de la Renta continue to work with Galliano?

“John and I have known each other for many years and I’m a great admirer of his talent. He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I’m happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative,” stated Mr. de la Renta.

I am an alcoholic. I have been in recovery for the past two years. Several years prior to my sobriety, I descended into the madness of the disease. I said and did things which hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community. I have expressed my sorrow privately and publicly for the pain which I have caused and I continue to do so. I remain committed to making amends to those I have hurt. I am grateful to Oscar beyond words for inviting me to spend time with him in the familiar surroundings of a design studio. His support and faith in me is humbling,” commented Mr. Galliano.

I’ll be curious to see what Galliano’s next move is.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he tries to launch a budget collection.   Or maybe he’ll be on his best behavior, make amends and stay on at Oscar de la Renta’s Studio.
