Topshop Coming to Los Angeles, late 2012 or early 2013?

This is big news for shoppers in Los Angeles.  Both the Huffington Post and the LA Times report that a Topshop store will open in the Grove shopping center on Fairfax.   That's good news for savvy shoppers, since the only way we've been able to get Topshop in Los Angeles is via Barney's sales, Fred Segal in West Hollywood, and occasionally Loehmann's. Of course, you can always by online at the Topshop.com or eBay! Although, I think Topshop is sometimes junk, every now and then they produce some good stuff, like their Celia Birtwell and Kate Moss collaborations.  The question now is will Topshop be open for Christmas shopping in 2012 , or in the New Year of 2013?  Stay tuned, as the shopping world turns.

REISS Announces James Dean Collection

During my recent foot surgery and subsequent enforced bed rest, I developed an addiction to Turner Classic Movies (TCM).  One of the films I really enjoyed was "East of Eden" starring the brilliant James Dean as Cal Trask.  While I was watching the film, I couldn't help but think how modern Dean's wardrobe looks. The scene where he rides the train from Salinas to Monterey wearing a v-neck sweater and baggy pants, is amazing.  Dean's look is not dated, but still fashionably fresh. Apparently, I'm not the only one that thinks so. British Retailer Reiss has just launched their James Dean collection  of separates paying homage to the Dean's timeless style over 50 years after the actor's death.

Pictured: Dean in more traditional wear, along side Reiss shirts.
The Reiss collection shows pictures of Dean in his leather jacket from Rebel without a Cause, his cowboy gear from Giant, and his crew sweater look from East of Eden. The collection offers chinos, leather jackets, button down shirts and sweaters for men. I always thought James Dean was in the fashion vanguard and had great style. I'm so pleased to see this collection. What do you think?  Guys, do you like Jimmy Dean style? Ladies, would you buy it for your guy? Click here to visit Reiss.com to check it out and let me know what you think.   As David Essex said, see him shake on the movie screen, Jimmy Dean... James Dean. Yeah.

New Banana Republic ‘Mad Men’ collection to Launch March 1

Some of you will remember that last August, Banana Republic launched their limited edition MadMen collection.  Well, stay tuned, coming March 1, "MadMen" collection part deux is coming to your local Banana Republic store and online. “Mad Men” Costume Designer Janie Bryant is the creative force behind this one.  With Spring in mind, the inspiration for this collection is the country club scenes in the “Mad Men” series.  The picture above is an updated version of the Bette dress from the last collection, in a nice spring pink.  The collection features more than 40 pieces of apparel and jewelry for men and women. For men, there will be lightweight separates and suits.  For women, get ready to channel your inner Jackie Kennedy or Grace Kelly with "MadMen" sheath dresses and floral patterns.

I'll bet money that there will be specials and coupons available via the Banana website and their Facebook page to offer fans coupons and savings as there were with the August collection.  Watch this space, as I will post the deals when I find them.  I will also be reviewing the collection shortly and letting you know what I think of the quality for the price. Below is a picture of model Shalom Harlow wearing one of the new dresses with a colorful vintage style print.

Sponsored Post: Oscar Fashions Curated by People StyleWatch Editors on sale at Gilt on Feb. 27th

How did you enjoy the Oscars show tonight? I loved seeing The Artist win so many awards, including Best Picture.  As for the red carpet fashions, my favorites were Penelope Cruz in Armani Prive, Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton, Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab and of course Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji.

The Recessionista's Oscar Night at Home! Enjoy a Wolfgang Puck recipe from the Governor's Ball at Home

The best free party and display of fashion pageantry in the world is about to begin.  Yes, I'm talking about the  Annual Academy awards.  The show will be broadcast worldwide on Sunday, Feb 27thth.  That is tonight darlings!  Here in Los Angeles, the preparations have begun.  Some of the best party planners and chefs in the world are planning the Governor's Ball (the official after party.)  Los Angeles uber-celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck always cooks for the ball and provides his special recipes. He prepares a sumptious spread featuring fresh seafood, blinis with smoked salmon and lots of caviar.  But I was looking for entertaining secrets for all the recessionistas watching at home.  There most be fabuless tips and recipes for throwing your own party.  Last year, I had the chance to talk to the Oscar chef himself, Wolfgang Puck, about how viewers at home can treat themselves to a special Oscar event.

Although Wolfgang will be cooking up some high-end treats for the Oscars, his famous original Spago restaurant on Sunset ( I was amused to see it was right behind a rental car company when I first came to Los Angeles)  was founded on some simple food basics like Pizza that were once considered too low brow to be gourmet.  And that is one of the things I've always loved about Wolfgang Puck,  he makes the simple elegant and delicious.  I should know. Over the years, I have eaten all all his LA restaurants!   So when I was given the opportunity to talk to Wolfgang Puck about the awards, I had to ask, "Which one of your wonderful recipes is cheap and cheerful to make at home for the Oscars?"

"I’m serving a variation of my Chicken Pot Pie at the Governors Ball.  It’s easy for the home cook and rather inexpensive too," says master chef Puck with a grin. "You can substitute the puff pastry with some home-made pie crust or store-bought pie crust.  The great thing about it is you can assemble it the day ahead, put it in the refrigerator, then bake it when you’re ready to eat it."

Voila!  Anything that is delicious and easy is an Oscar win for all of us. :) So here is the recipe for you to enjoy at home.

CHICKEN POT PIE
(recipe courtesy Wolfgang Puck, "Wolfgang Puck Makes it Easy," Rutledge Hill Press, 2004)

Yield:  Serves 4
2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken, cut into 1-inch chunks
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
1/2 pound organic red-skinned potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 pound organic carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
1 sprig thyme
1 bay leaf
1 cup white wine
2 cups organic chicken stock
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream
1/4 cup dry sherry
1/2 cup shelled or frozen peas
Approximately 1/2 pound frozen puff pastry, defrosted following package instructions
1 cage-free egg
Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, and toss in a mixing bowl with 2 tablespoons of the flour until evenly coated.  In a large skillet over high heat, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil.  Add the chicken pieces, reduce the heat slightly, and sauté, turning them occasionally, until light golden and thoroughly cooked, about 5 to 10 minutes.  Using a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside.  Add the remaining oil and 2 tablespoons of the butter to the pan, then add the potatoes, carrots, and onions and sauté until they begin to look glossy and bright, 2 to 3 minutes.  Reduce the heat to medium, stir in the garlic, red pepper flakes, thyme, and bay leaf, and sauté, just until the vegetables begin to color slightly, 2 to 3 minutes more.
Add the wine, turn up the heat, stir and scrape with a wooden spoon to deglaze the pan deposits, and simmer until the liquid reduces by about half, 3 to 5 minutes.  Add the chicken stock and the 1 cup of cream.  Bring the liquid to a boil, reduce the heat slightly, and simmer briskly until the liquid reduces by about half again and is thick and creamy, about 15 minutes.  Remove the sprig of thyme and the bay leaf.
Stir in the reserved chicken pieces and the sherry.  Stir together the butter and remaining flour and stir this paste into the mixture.  Season the sauce to taste with salt and pepper.  Transfer to 4 large individual ovenproof 2-cup soup bowls, 4 ramekins of the same size, or a 2-quart baking dish.  Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the filling is cold, at least 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.  Make sure the puff pastry is no thicker than 1/4 inch.  With the tip of a sharp knife, cut the pastry into 4 circles that will overhang the rim of the serving bowls or ramekins by about half an inch; for a single large baking dish, cut 4 circles that will cover its top, or use one large sheet.
In a small bowl, beat together the egg and the remaining 1 tablespoon cream to make an egg wash.  Brush the tops and outsides of the rims of the bowls.  Place the bowls, ramekins, or baking dish on a baking tray and place the puff pastry circles on top, pressing them gently over the sides of the dishes . Pierce the tops with the tip of a paring knife.  Brush the top of the pastry with egg wash.  Carefully transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake until the filling is bubbling hot and the pastry is a deep golden brown, 25 to 35 minutes.  Serve hot.

QVC Hollywood Collections are Oscar Ready: The Recessionista's Picks

Pictured: My Wish List from the QVC Red Carpet Show.
Shopping network QVC put on a fabulous party last night at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, showcasing some great Los Angeles designers and beauty products.   Above is a little story board of some of the items from the new collections I am loving.   From top left my picks are:

1) Wendy Williams Cabochon & Faceted Stone Drop Earrings
QVC Item # J265423   These look like Indian earring, with a bit of far east intrigue, priced at under $40.00, they come in three different colors.  They will dress up any outfit.

2)  RP by Rachel Pally Sleeveless Maxi Dress with Tie Waist QVC Item A222397 Loving the fuchsia color and easy style. It's tres elegant, but also the dresses offers easy one outfit dressing.

3) K-DASH by Kardashian Long Sheer Cardigan with Sequin Trim  QVC Item #A222905  price $89.50   This is a surprise pick for me as the K-Dash stuff is not always a favorite of mine. I see Kourtney's love for vintage in this elegant piece, and I love the blush color in the dusty rose.

 4) Nicole Richie Collection Printed Crinkle Maxi Dress in Red QVC Item #A224298 price is $115.00  Very boho-chic. This shows off Nicole's taste for 1960s styles and flower power.

5) Judith Ripka Sterling Yellow Diamonique Earrings QVC Item #J265033 the price is $183.00.  They are more expensive than most QVC pieces, but less than Judith Ripka's boutique line. These really pop for some elegant bling that will dress up any outfit or occasion.

6) RP by Rachel Pally Rolling Waves One Shoulder Maxi Dress. This dress is so elegant and will flatter a variety of shapes. The high waist has a lot of ease in it and could be belted to dress it up a little.  It is on sale for $85.32.

Check out the Mark Zunio dresses from New York Fashion Week, there are some beautiful pieces. One especially chic piece is Mark of Style by Mark Zunino Embellished Tunic with Uneven Hem A222353  $64.00. What's interesting about this top is the jewelry is already built in on the embellished neckline. You don’t need a necklace, just some earrings or a ring.

Glee Look on a Budget: Rachel Berry's Bridesmaids in Merona for Target

Pictured: Rachel Berry's Bridesmaids "Gleek" Out in Merona for Target dresses. (credit Lea Michele
@msleamichele)
If you read here you know that I don't love everything that Target produces for fashion.   But every now and then, they produce a winner in their Merona for Target line. Merona has really stepped up their line since designer Isaac Mizrahi left Target shelves.  To me, this dress is reminiscent of some of the old Issac Target sheath dresses. If you watch the hit show Glee , then you may have noticed the cool dresses on Rachel Berry's bridesmaids. The bright fuschia dresses were from Target's Merona line and cost about $25.00.

Pictured: Merona for Target Side Tab Ponte dress priced at $24.99
The dress is Merona's Side Tab Ponte dress and is available only on Target.com, although you might glimpse it in store if someone returns it.  One thing I like about the style of this dress is the empire waist and the side tab buttons will draw attention to the waist, the smallest part of anyone's body.  As you can see from the Glee photo above, the dress looks good on a variety of shapes and sizes.  Fuschia was literally one of the hottest colors on the runway at New York Fashion Week, appearing in the Milly show and in the Michael Kors spring line.  The color is always a staple in designer resort collections, so it's nice to see it in a lower priced dress line.

Earlier this week, Lou Eyrich, the Glee Costumer Designer was  given the Career Achievement in Television Award at the Costume Designer Guild Awards.  Jane Lynch praised Eyrich for having a great eye for selecting garments for the  Glee characters. This Target dress is a good example of this.

The Return of Jason Wu for Target

Pictured: Full stock of Jason Wu handbags at my local store. (photo: J. Hall)
I don't know if this is good news or not, but Jason Wu for Target straw bags are back in stock at my local Target.  They are also quite a few pieces of clothing on the racks.   The clothes look like returns coming in one by one, the bags look like restocking since there are quite a few of them hanging on the racks.  I have to say, these poor little straw bags look abandoned, and I think they might even go to clearance.  My fellow blogger Target Addict thinks the bags are being restocked and has seen them at her local Target. The other thing that I have seen in stores is a few Wu items on the clearance racks.

Pictured: Some Jason Wu dresses are on the clearance racks. (photo: M. Hall)
On a recent Target trip I saw the above "online exclusive" dress on the clearance rack for a mere $11.00.  I couldn't help but wonder if it was the same one I returned to the store after discovering that I looked like Aunt Bee from the Andy Griffith show.  I hope the restocking and clearance items mean that consumers are waking up to some of the quality issues here, and losing their mania for this collection.  Judging by the thousands of Jason Wu for Target items still for sale on eBay, I would say that consumers are going to hang on to their money and not pay the inflated prices. The only item I see going to high prices are the cat totes, t-shirts and scarves.  Target should've made more of those for cat lovers everywhere.

The 2012 Costume Designer Guild Awards Honor Film Wardrobe and Fashion

Pictured: Actress Kate Beckinsale in Vivienne Westwood on the red carpet.
Last night, in the build up to the Oscars, Los Angeles hosted the Costume Designer Guild Awards (CDGA).  These awards honor the designers behind the scenes who help to create the characters and setting for a film by creating unique wardrobes.  The winners are voted by their peers, fellow costume designers. Honored for their work in film were Arianne Phillips for period costumes in the Madonna directed film W.E.  Other films receiving honors  for costumer design included "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “W.E.,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” “Glee,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Downton Abbey." Kate Beckinsale was awarded the Lacoste Spotlight Award. She dazzled on the red carpet in a silver, off the shoulder Vivienne Westwood gown.  Accepting the award, she was quite modest, exclaiming she had just been lucky to work with the right people. The master of ceremonies was Glee's Jane Lynch who looked elegant in a red David Meister signature gown with a halter top and full skirt.  Check out the video below to see all the highlights on the red carpet and learn more about this great evening.  This event is never televised, and unlike the Oscars, it's always very private.  The video features screen legend Clint Eastwood and other celebrities.

It's fun to escape in the fantasy of film, isn't it? Readers, who do you think will be best dressed at the Oscars. I'm praying that worst dressed won't be one of the greatest actresses working in film, Meryl Streep. Meryl, you're gorgeous, please call David Meister, he can help.  Check out the full page spread of Jessica Lange in People magazine this week in her $600.00 David Meister gown, she looks fab!

QVC Readies Oscar Buzz Program with new Rachel Pally and Nicole Richie fashions

Discount shopping website QVC is getting ready to roll out red carpet fashion and beauty products for viewers in preparation for this weekend's Oscar show. QVC will be broadcasting  “Buzz on the Red Carpet – Live from LA” to take viewers behind-the-scenes with exclusive content from top fashion designers, beauty mavens, celebrities and jewelry designers Judith Ripka and Erica Courtney. There will be two live broadcasts. This first will be this Friday, Feb 24th at 9 p.m. (ET) and  the second will be on Saturday at 8 p.m. (ET).   Last year's festivities were virtually rained out as a strong rainstorm hit Los Angeles, literally reducing the outdoor plaza of the Four Seasons Beverly Hills to mud and puddles. Hopefully, this year's event will feature sunshine and dry ground.

Pictured: Rachel Pally's one shoulder maxi dresses for QVC, priced at $82.00 US
Fashion designers/celebrities scheduled to participate in the show include Nicole Richie and Los Angeles designer Rachel Pally. Also making an appearance will be The Kardashians' mom-manager Kris Jenner and Joan Rivers.  I can live without Joan and Kris Jenner, to me they are just sales people hawking their wares and licensing their name to QVC.  Nothing wrong with that, but I don't want to spend my money on what they are selling because I don't see value in the products.

Pictured: The Nicole Richie Printed Crinkle Maxi Dress for $115.00 US.
However,  I'd like to see what  Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Bouwer, Nicole Richie and most of all, one my favorite designers Rachel Pally, have to help us all get ready for a special evening out or night on the town.  Nicole Richie is not a fashion designer, but she has a great look.  She sprang on the red carpet a few years ago with a unique boho chic look that I think QVC has done a great job replicating judging by the pictures of the maxi dress above.  Rachel Pally is well known in fashion and celebrities circles for her comfortable and fashionable dresses.  Angelina Jolie has been spotted wearing her maxi dresses.

This show will also include some beauty products at reduced QVC prices. Two beauty lines,  which I have used and like as delivering good value will be on sale:  Kate Sommerville and Smashbox.  And of course, you can't get red carpet or cocktail party ready without Spanx and those will be on sale too at reduced prices.  To learn more, visit qvc.com/redcarpet.

Adele Rocks the Red Carpet in Burberry at the 2012 Brit Awards

Pictured: Adele in a custom made Burberry gown at the Brit awards, image courtesy of Burberry.
Everyone who listens to music knows that Adele has the voice of an Angel, but now, she's dressing divinely too.  Since Karl Lagerfeld threw mud at her with some very mean spirited remarks to the press about her weight, Adele has been flexing some serious fashion muscle.  Last night she showed up at the Brit Awards looking stunning in a custom made Burberry gown.  The dress fit her beautifully and showed off her streamlined curves. The embellishments around the neckline highlighted her beautiful face to great effect.  It's amazing to watch Adele's fashion evolution.  She's certainly showing the world that you don't have to be model size to be fashionable or beautiful. The singer presents a great role model for women of all shapes and sizes, as she is clearly comfortable in her own skin.  As Adele recently said on 60 Minutes, "Even if I did have, you know, a 'Sports Illustrated' body, I'd still wear elegant clothes," she said.  In the same interview, she advised,  "be happy with yourself and appreciate your body-- only then should you try to change things about yourself." Great advice, especially when you have Christopher Bailey and Burberry helping out.  To check out Burberry fashion on sale, check out the listings at MyPerfectSale.

Beware the Ides of March! DVF Kids will arrive at the Gap

Pictured: A Sneak Peak of the Girls dresses from DVF for Gap (image via Gap promo video)
Beware the Ides of March fashionistas, because that is when fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg's Gap collection for children will be available.  As you can see from the preview shot above, the collection will feature plenty of Diane's colorful trademark prints.  I can't wait to buy my little niece one of the dresses.  I know she will love it.  The collection is expected to be available for purchase to customers on March 15, 2012 through GapKids and babyGap stores in almost 30 countries including the  United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, France, China, Japan and Australia as well as online in 75 countries.

I think this collection will sell as quickly as Stella McCartney for Gap Kids did.  Most children love to express their style and independence through their clothing choices. I know my little niece and nephew do.   That makes this collection doubly attractive. I think kids will love it because it's bright and cheerful, and moms will love it because it's so chic.  Who doesn't want their child to be the best looking kid at school?

Now to see the Burberry show, mark your calendars with the show times for Monday, Feb. 20th:

If you are on Twitter, you can follow the collection before it hits the runway, using the hashtag #Tweetwalk to see images from the show posted to Twitter. The way Burberry uses digital assets and social media to bring there collections to the mass market has always been innovative.  I love that you no longer need to be on a special VIP list or press to see the show.

Now, to watch the show on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 here on The Recessionista, simply click on the arrow on the player below to watch the show. Enjoy! Marni for H&M Los Angeles Launch Event

Pictured: Drew Barrymore in Marni for H&M , image courtesy of H&M
Last night celebrities, including Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder and Milla Jovovich, gathered at a private event to celebrate the launch of  the Marni for H&M collection.  Even Mel Gibson was there, honestly admitting that he had NO idea who Marni was. Cool huh? Is there something in this collection for Mel?  I have no idea why he was there.  Sounds like he doesn't really know either unless it was a paid appearance and he was just passing through.  More knowledgeable was Drew Barrymore (the model for the New Look Giles Gold Collection) who arrived wearing one of the Marni for H&M dresses.

"I love H&M and I love Marni. I love how H&M are bringing the regal, chic clothes of Marni to everyone," said party guest Drew Barrymore.  To see all the scenes and preview pictures of the clothes from the collection, check out the video below.

The jewelry looksplastic and rather cheap, but the clothes are classic Marni. Of course, you have to wait to see them in person to access the quality.  Just because celebrities are paid to wear it, doesn't mean it's any good. Look for this at your local H&M store, but it will probably on be there on March 8th for about 30 minutes and you'll have to wait in line for a few hours to try to get it.   Following the initial store openings, unfortunately, it's predictable to say that most of the collection will be on sale on eBay.

NYFW: Milly by Michelle Smith Fall 2012 is Future Perfect

Pictured: Michelle Smith in Milly at the closing of her show.  (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images)
Designer Michelle Smith showed off her Milly Fall 2012 collection at Lincoln Center, affirming for her that fall is not a somber season, but rather one that pops with vibrant colors. The collection was entitled "Future Perfect" and it lived up to its name.  The color pallet for Milly 2012 included brilliant cobalt blues, bright fuchsia and kelly greens.  More familiar seasonal colors like white winter, mustard, rust and black were also featured along with the designer's trademark prints.

Before the show, the designer indicated that her Fall 2012 collection would be bold.  "My Fall 2012 collection is bold and modern: innovative technical fabrics merge with traditional couture techniques, and vibrant pops of color excite a base palette of black and white," notes Michelle Smith, Designer and Creative Director, Milly. The pops of color did indeed excite, especially the stunning fuchsia dresses, one with black lace overlay.   More traditional styles included black dresses with full skirts in coordinating textured patterns.

There were many nods to Milly's time in Paris working with design house Hermès including French berets and charming chapeaus with veils, some with bows on them.  Look for this collection at upscale retailers this fall. Later, look for Milly on sale at Gilt Groupe and in department stores.  I always post Milly sales here on The Recessionista because I think her designs provide some of the best value in fashion. I've heard from some of you that you spent several hundred dollars on Jason Wu for Target, then ended up returning your purchase due to fit and quality issues.  Next time perhaps, perhaps consider purchasing a Milly dress.  The fabric, manufacturing and design will be of higher quality and it will last longer than one season.  I love my Milly Addison dress purchased on sale at Bloomingdale's.

NYFW: Norma Kamali Debuts her under $100.00 line: Kamali Kulture

Pictured: Two colored crew neck chemise dress from Kamali Kulture (image via Norma Kamali)
Yesterday at New York Fashion Week, Norma Kamali debuted her Kamali Kulture line at the Chelsea Pier.  The line is designed for ladies like me who love fashion, but don't want to overspend.  Every item in the Kamali Kulture line is affordably priced at under $100.00 US.   There are plenty of little black dresses in the collection plus the designer's trademark all in one top.  Ms. Kamali's presentation featured video screens along with life size paper doll stand-up models showing off the clothes.  The show was both whimsical and high tech all at once, from one of the grand dames of fashion who showed she still has a few tricks up her sleeve. Ms. Kamali has always been a lover of technology as a way to get close to her customers and deliver service, but for many years, she didn't show at New York Fashion Week. It's a pleasure to see her back in top form with her OMA (Made in America) line as well as her lower priced line Kamali Kulture.

"It's a different time," Kamali said in an interview with the Associated Press. "We're in a different social climate. Women have a budget. We all have to work. There are very few women who have the luxury of that choice of not working now, and we all want to have new clothes because it makes us feel good, but we don't have the money to spend on it all of the time. This is an important story for me to tell."

Consumers will be glad to know that Kamali Kulture includes Ms. Kamali's top selling swimsuits.  There are also pencil skirts, suiting, crew neck tops, and the side draped dresses she has done so well. Kamali Kulture is available for order now from the designer's website, with orders shipping Feb. 29th.

NYFW: Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012 is all about Vintage Vogue

Pictured: A model walks the runway at the Fall Oscar de la Renta show (image M.Hall via livestream)
If you love the styles from Mad Men, the confections that Jackie Kennedy wore when she was first lady, or Sharon Tate's Valley of the Dolls look, then you will absolutely adore the Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012 collection.  This was such a pretty, feminine collection. The collection offered many updated Grace Kelly, Prince of Monaco looks, from the wide headbands holding the pulled back hair.  Many of the dresses featured beautiful appliques and embellishments.

The suits were very chic, with collarless jackets and skirts with soft gathering around the waistband.  The whole collection. One suit (pictured above) had a stunning back lace overly on the skirt and jacket. Of course, no Oscar show is complete without the grand finale, his stunning ball gowns.

If Cinderella was still working it, she's been out at the ball in this Oscar pink dress. What do you think readers?  There's so much vintage 1960s style on the runway this season, it's really stunning.   Betsey Johnson and Nicole Miller gave us the memories of the hippie/swinging sixties. Oscar de la Renta offers the sixties fantasy of the playing dress up in Jackie Kennedy's closet and it works.

NYFW: Pamella Roland Fall 2012 is Oscar Worthy

Pictured: The final walk at Pamella Roland, image via Michael Shane.
Here in Los Angeles designer Pamella Roland's exquisite gowns are red carpet favorites during awards season. Watching her show at New York Fashion Week today it was easy to see why.  There were gorgeous, shimmering evening gowns with full skirts and even small trains.  Streamlined sophistication was the tone of the show.  With Ms. Roland, nothing is over the top or too far out.  Some designers put on a drama filled show or hire musical acts. With Pamella Roland, there's none of that. It's all about the clothes. And the clothes speak for themselves with their understated elegance.   Click here to see a video of the final  walk done by our New York correspondent, the fabulous Michael Shane. I love how the designer bought her children up out of the audience for her final bow.  Look for Pamella Roland at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.  To find her fashions for less, check eBay and special sales (which I do my best to announce.)

NYFW: Kohl's Announces Rock & Republic for Kohl's Available Feb. 15th

Pictured: Kohl's brings Rock & Republic to stores this month
Part of this season's New York Fashion Week was a press launch for Kohl's version of upscale brand Rock & Republic last Friday. Rock & Republic has been previously sold at upscale retailers like Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom. Kohl's is partnering with Rock & Republic to bring apparel lines for both men and women to the reasonably priced retailer  The women's collection will include the brand's well known skinny jeans, graphic tees, jackets, dresses, shoes and even yes, the bane of my fashion existence, hoodies!  The men's collection offers shirts, jeans and jackets.  Additional launches may include home and children's fashions.

Pictured: Baby Doll top from Rock & Republic for Kohl's priced at $48.00, on sale for $30.00
The new collaboration is now available for order via Kohl's online and in-stores. As with many of the lines Kohl's brings to market, they are seldom sold at the Kohl's retail price. The Rock & Republic Kohl's tops are already on sale priced from $24.99.  There are also some attractive denim tuxedo jackets priced at about $60.00. The ruched dress on-sale for about $50.00 looks like a great little black dress.   Based on the look book, this is an impressive collection.  I look forward to seeing it in stores.  Remember, with Kohl's not only are most things on sale, you can further discount your purchase price by finding a coupon on their  website or signing up for their email list.  If you check the collection out, let me know what you think.

Valentine's Day: Consider a Priceless Valentine's Card of your own making

Pictured: Romantic English poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning

Looking for a Valentine's Day quotes, sayings, love letters and free cards? Check out  The History Channel's website . This website has some great quotes and letters that may inspire you to write your own love letter. Romantic lover of English literature that I am, I especially love the story of the Brownings.

Pictured above is the actual letter poet Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett. He wrote, " I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett, -- and this is no off-hand complimentary letter." He touched her heart and won her love with nothing more than his words, some paper, ink and a nominally priced postage stamp.  He sent no chocolates, flowers or expensive gifts, just his words. Now that's priceless.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Partners with Gilt.com With An Exclusive Sale to Benefit The Nature Conservancy

Pictured: Model Julie Henderson poses with a surfboard for Sports Illustrated.
Mark your calendars to shop Gilt Groupe on Feb. 14th if you are looking for a special swimsuit for this summer. The shopping site will be doing a special sale on swimwear and surfboards to benefit the Nature Conservancy. For example, if a swimsuit top costs $46, then all $46 goes to The Nature Conservancy (TNC.)  Julie Henderson, 6-time veteran Swimsuit model posed for the Gilt Group sale and we had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about the sale and posing for Sport Illustrated.

What are some tricks for looking good in a swimsuit?

Finding a suit that complements your body — every woman’s body is different. Whatever your favorite body part is, you should try to promote it. If it’s your chest, wear something that’s a little more, you know, va-va-voom! You gotta pick your thing. You know, is it a one-piece or a two? Is it shorts? What is the thing that’s going to make you feel your best?

Do you do anything differently to prepare for the Swimsuit issue?

I obviously work out a little bit more because some of the swimsuits are as small as a postage stamp. So you’re kind of like, Hmmm I won’t have the piece of chocolate cake tonight. But that’s really just right before, and it’s just to make me feel better –I’m sure the pictures look exactly the same! But if you feel better, that comes through too.

Are you excited about this collaboration?

I think it’s great because the proceeds are going to the Nature Conservancy, and this is our first time collaborating with them. We’re a swimsuit issue and I think we need to be out there promoting cleaner beaches, cleaner water, and ocean life. And Gilt is such a powerhouse. So many people are on there all the time — as we were just discussing, I can’t even buy a book! — so it’s a good way to raise awareness for the Conversancy and get it to the people we’d like to target most.

What do you think readers?  Are you interested in swimsuits featured in Sports Illustrated, or do you prefer to spend your fashion dollars on other items?  As Julie says, some of the swimsuits are indeed as "small as a postage stamps" so hopefully the prices are also small.
