Millions of women around the world watched the Emmy awards on TV Sunday, preceded by the Red Carpet and celebrity fashion parade. Most of us watch and look at the gowns as our fantasy of what we would wear or buy if we could afford it, or had somewhere to wear a full length dress or ballgown too. This year’s Emmy Awards was full of bright pastels, lots of glimmer, one shoulder gowns, and of course, lots of expensive jewelry and accessories. But how does the average woman, capitalize on those styles and stay within a reasonable budget? Elementary, my dears, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. To find out how to parlay the celebrity styles into The Recessionista lifestyle, I sat down for a chat with celebrity stylist Jen Rade to get her take on this year’s fashions. Here’s my interview with her, sprinkled with pictures of what’s new in at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. She has some great tips here that I think you will enjoy reading.
Q. I’m seeing that the one shoulder gown/dress look is still in? What do you think of the look and can you make some recommendations for TJ Maxx?
A. I styled Carrie Ann Inaba and she wore a one-shoulder gown so I personally like this look. I think it’s flattering to most women because the angle of a one-shoulder gown accentuates your shape in a nice way plus it show skin without having to go strapless which can be a pain to wear.

I think women can adapt this trend into the wardrobe with designer pieces from T.J.Maxx, ranging from long dresses to one shoulder tops and even slouchy sweaters that aren’t one-shoulder but can drape and fall off one shoulder for a similar sexy look.
Q. Kelly Osbourne said on E! that stripes are fine for a red carpet dress, as long as they are the right width. What do you think of that?
A. I rarely do prints on the red carpet. I find them hard to photograph. However I do love stripes for daily life but prefer tonal striping, like gray on black, or stripes that have a similar tone so it’s not too distracting to the
Q. There’s seems to be no end to the lace overlay gown look—is that something you can find variations of at TJ Maxx/Marshalls?
A.I love lace!!! Love! And to me, it’s not a trend but a total classic! Both T.J.Maxx and Marshalls have a variety of on-trend designer pieces that incorporate the lace trend and are 20% to 60% less than department stores.

I feel every woman should have something lace in her wardrobe whether a lace-trimmed camisole or a full lace blouse or a lace skirt. Lace can be very feminine but can also be toughened up with jeans and boots or a great leather jacket.
Q. I’m seeing lots of heaving, hanging earrings….but many actresses also wore very discreet diamond or pearl studs. What do you recommend pairing dramatic jewelry or classic jewelry with?
A. With dramatic jewelry, it’s important to keep the rest of the look simple. I’m always telling people…Everything can’t be something!!!! So if a statement necklace or big earrings are your “something”, pair with a simple t shirt, jeans and a jacket. Then the piece will stand out even more.

With classic jewelry like pearl or diamond studs, or even something with a bit of color like turquoise or coral, you can have a little more fun with clothing. A printed top needs simple small earrings or it gets distracting.

Q. What looks from the red carpet can we find now at TJMaxx/Marshalls?
A.You can find everything at TJ Maxx and Marshalls! Literally! Lace, leather, amazing color tops, sweaters, jackets, great dresses, and the footwear selection at Marshalls is incredible! Plus the prices are amazing! Whatever fall trend you want, it can be found at TJ or Marshalls for way less than any department store and they carry tons of major designers!
What looks are you loving at TJ and Marshalls right now readers? Leave a comment and share. I was amazed to see a big TJ Maxx on my recent trip to London on Kensington High Street. I’m glad to see the savings spreading across the pond!
