Kmart Goes Vogue with a New Look on Affordable Style

This is not your Mother’s Kmart! Check it out, this is a picture of a new military inspired jacket by Kmart Design from the September issue of Vogue.  Yes, Vogue magazine you know that place that Anna Wintour works. To my surprise, I saw this jacket live in person at the recent BlogHer conference in New York, and it really is a WOW.  Both from the look of the garment and the price point.  The “Sergeant Pepper” styled jacket was on a mannequin at the Kmart Design “Getting Gorgeous” event booth, and I did a double take when I saw it.  This is really a new look for Kmart Design.  One of the things I like about their new line, inspired by what they call “rocker chic” is that it is created by some unknown, but obviously fabuless designers. These are really trained designers working on this product line.  I am so tired of these celebrity fashion lines that put all the money into getting the celebrity to label their product, and then they turn out cheap, poorly made fashions under the label. In contrast, Kmart has taken a refreshing approach.  They are working with over 200 trained designers from boutiques and department stores to build a new fashion line.

Kathy Huynh, VP of Women’s Apparel Design for Kmart, says “We want fresh fashion that’s on-trend but it also understandable and affordable. It’s about buying those few new pieces and incorporating them into your wardrobe to give everything else a fresh lift”.   Look for more of the new Kmart designs  debuting in the September 2010 issue of Vogue shot by famed photographer Alexi Lubomirski (V Magazine, GQ).  I wonder if we might see Anna Wintour turning up at an event in New York all dolled up in the big K? Now that would give whole new meaning to Fashion’s Night Out! :)

What do you think readers? I’m impressed.  Frankly, I didn’t expect something this good looking from Kmart.  Note, the line also includes some great looking jewelry at cheap and cheerful prices.

This looks like it has some serious potential. The true test will be looking at it up close for fit and construction. Overall, there is huge potential.

Wow, I'm super impressed. I'd completely written KMart off for any purchases, but from the looks of that jacket, I was wrong. Will definitely be checking this out!

I just started a new job and I have been clothes shopping every weekend for the last three weeks. I have passed K-Mart each weekend and not gone in. K-Mart…for clothes? Yeah, I like this collection. I think my wardrobe needs a little edge. Thanks for pointing me toward The Big K!

So far, my clothing purchases at KMart have been limited to the (amazing) Norma Kamali line. Like you, 'though, I saw these photos in Vogue and was pleasantly surprised. I'll visit my local KMart for a further look.

Like you, Im surprised at KMart's new line…
I hope they can continue to make stylish (hopefully) sturdy, clothing as these are really rough economic times, and my shopping budget has dramatically shrunk…

    I LOVE the purple scarf!

    Dear Recessionista,

Once again, you tell us where to find the greatest looking clothes that money will buy, and who says “Can't buy me love”? The Fab 4 was wrong. Can buy me love! These new K-Mart duds look good.

Thank you, your quite Fab yourself!

I have been stalking each of the items you highlighted on Kmart's website since catching the adds two weeks ago in InStyle's September edition…very excited to see them in person!

I am so excited to think that I might be able to afford some trendy looks without going into debt. In this economy it is so nice to see that someone cares about those who need to watch their pennies more than ever before. How considerate, thoughtful and well done. I cannot wait until these fashions are in the KMart stores. Thank you.

I love the fact KMart has come out with what looks to be a great line and chic, definitely not cheap.

I can't wait to get the Rocker Jacket – still trying to find it online, maybe it's not available yet, but I'm going to keep looking!

Thanks as always for your posts – they are my guilty pleasure every day when they pop up in my inbox. Keep up the great work!
