Now that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week shows for Spring/Summer 2015 are ended, I’ve taken some time to think about what I saw on the runway to try to summarize the shows. Each show always contains garments that you know buyers and stylists will pick up for next season and those that will be left behind. Some consumers may not realize that much of what the designers send down the runway will never be picked up by buyers to be mass-produced and sold in stores. You can take a look at some of the pictures from the shows and make some very educated guesses about what might actually show up on retails racks. As you might expect, most of the Spring/Summer 2015 collections offered plenty of floral and bright vibrant colors. However, there was still plenty of black and white on the runway, and more muted colors as well. For women, the Spring 2015 color palette includes Aquamarine, Scuba Blue, Lucite Green,Classic Blue,Toasted Almond, Strawberry Ice, Tangerine, Custard.Marsala and Glacier Gray. Here’s a look at some of the shows The Recessionista attended at New York Fashion Week, featuring some emerging designers with unique perspectives on Spring. Continue reading

The upcoming Elie Tahari capsule collection for Kohl’s is a love song to the city of New York, penned in polyester with a touch of spandex thrown in for ease. The collection is not officially on sale until Sept. 26, but Kohl’s is offering a special presale on their website now with savings of $10.00 of a purchase of $50.00 or more using code FASHION10. I haven’t seen all the pieces from the collection, but Kohl’s did send me one item to preview. Here are my initial thoughts on the collection and a giveaway of a Kohl’s gift card for my readers to go shopping. Continue reading
The Altazurra collection for Target has been in market less than a week and there’s already a 50% off 1 item special posted on Target.com. Use code PREVIEW to get the savings when you shop Altazurra for Target. I’ve never seen a discount like this on a Target designer collection so soon after launch. Looks like Target is making marketing push to sell out the stock that’s left. The deal undercuts prices on Altazurra for Target via Net-a-Porter and Target stores ( brick & mortar shopping.) Some of the collection items aren’t worth buying even with the deal, but some are. Read my review to see the best picks, like the little black dress and the peasant dress pictured above. If you bought in store, you could even return an item and get it online (if available) for the discounted 50% off 1 item special posted on Target.com.
Last week I had the privilege of seeing one of the most beautiful fashion shows at New York Fashion Week of this or any other season, Carolina Herrera’s Spring 2015 collection. The collection was inspired by the “color code of a flower.” The show featured stunning gowns, beautiful coats and brightly colored sheath dresses. The color palette was vibrant pinks, iris blues, majestic purples, paired with gray tones and soft yellow. As always, Carolina Herrera’s garments were distinctly feminine, with gorgeous appliqués and soft folds. Some of the garments featured digitized blooms (see the dress above.) The show was attended by the cream of New York society, celebrities and of course Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Little green trees lined the runway, giving the appearance of an elite garden party. According to the Daily Mail, Ms. Herrera’s Spring 2015 show may have cost as much as 1 million dollars. Continue reading
Last week at New York Fashion Week, DKNY presented the brand’s Spring 2015 collection. After struggling to get around New York City during New York Fashion Week in the heat and humidity, I was really feeling this collection. New York City really is the world all in one place. All the good, all the bad, all the joy and all the stress in one little island. For Spring 2015, DKNY is a sexy mix of street chic, designed for the “New York Nation” of urban warriors. If you are living in New York, or you have visited, then you will get this collection’s homage to New York City’s culture and creativity. The collection mixes geometric prints, blazing reds and pops of color. Each garment is statement making , designed for the women who is strong enough to make it through every day in New York and beyond.

For a Target collection made in China, Altuzarra for Target has much to offer. For fashion from Target, it’s really as good as it gets. This launch really is like Christmas morning for the fashionista on a budget. Having said that, some garments are better than others and some of the fabrics in the collection are more comfortable to wear than others. If you’re thinking of going shopping today to check out Altuzarra for Target, you should. Much of the collection is already sold out online at Target.com, but there’s still some on the racks in store and on the website too. The dresses and tops with the Mediterranean peasant blouse (pictured above) are some of our favorites. As with every Target designer collaboration, there are hits and misses. Some of the things we thought we would love were not flattering or well made when we actually tried everything on.

In a fashion world where models don’t show expression on the runway, and sometimes white and black are the only colors, a Desigual show is as refreshing as a breath of fresh air. At both their recent New York Fashion Week show & Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, Desigual showcased a collection that paid homage to women through compliments. The Spring-Summer 15 collection called “Say Something Nice” is an exotic, psychedelic journey through time. where words come to life in the form of geometric shapes, daisies, hearts, galactics, brush strokes and colors. The Desigual Spring/Summer 2015 collection looks like it jumped right out of a Frida Kahlo painting. Continue reading
